Environmental Protection

Protection of people and environment in Aluminij is an inseparable part of the technological process and it is carried out and constantly developed and improved by the highly educated staff. Confirmed results and achieved level of the environmental awareness of employees justify tens of millions of euro worth of investments in rehabilitation works, buildings, and protective devices.

The area of the former bauxite excavation site and landfill has been renewed, and brought back to its original condition, based on the expert studies, thus creating farmland, planted with grape vines, fruit trees and trees. Before the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the ​​watertight landfill pond of volume  8.7x106 m3 was made for the purposes of disposal of red mud prior, in Dobro Selo, the Čitluk Municipality area, which is being maintained in accordance with all the international requirements.

We biologically purify the water that is being discharged into the Neretva River, and the oil extraction path is done by the oil separators. In order to completely protect the Neretva River, we built a collecting pool of a volume of 5,000 m3, which is capable to accomodate all the harmful water in case of an accident. The quality of water that drains into the Neretva River is under surveillance. A number of devices are installed in Aluminij with the purpose of protecting workers and the environment. That is why our 256 electrolytic cells are fully enclosed, which allows capturing of the anode gas. Fluoride removing is done by the special alumina-based dry scrubbers with, and subsequently it is returned into the process.

In addition to high environmental impacts of anode gas purification, with fluoride recycling we improveour economical quality of the process. The efficiency of the people and environment equipment is followed by the regular chemical control of air, plants, soil, open and underground water flows.

About 400,000 square meters of the Aluminij grounds are planted with lawns, orchards, flowers, trees and other vegetation, and in the Aluminij Gardens we grow more than 180 plant species. Our employees with occupational diseases and reduced work ability work on our green areas and in the production of healthy food in our greenhouses, plant nurseries, orchards and vineyards, as a part of the humanization of work that has been conducted based on the model of the Western European countries, which makes us the pioneers in the South East Europe.

In the production technology of Aluminij, a continuous program of reduction of the harmful impacts on environment is being pursued, with special emphasis on the protection of soil, water and air, as it is on the water protected area, and near the populated area and the river.

With introduction of employees, business associates, suppliers and customers with our quality policy and environmental protection we also give them a possibility to contribute to environmental protection. Simply put, we implement the protection of people and environment according to the slogan, production-Yes, at any cost-No.
